From the parliamentary rostrum, We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (WCC–DB) and MECH demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, who took part in today’s 'queation time' session.
WCC–DB announced that they would also be submitting a no-confidence motion over the government’s economic policy, stressing that this very policy had driven people to the streets in protest.
Bogdan Bogdanov of WCC–DB stated that the budget reflects the government’s overall policy, but that the economic policy is “the greatest failure”. He then asked Zhelyazkov when he intends to resign.
“In the course of this year, our economy has grown at rates unseen in recent years. This year Bulgaria has double the average growth rate of Europe — we will reach around 3% growth and may even be second in Europe,” said PM Rosen Zhelyazkov.
Under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, a record 5 billion leva will be invested in the Bulgarian economy this year, much of which has already been allocated. According to the Prime Minister, Bulgaria should be talking about building and upgrading, rather than making comparisons with previous governments.
Revenue agencies have collected 9 billion leva more than in 2024 — a result, Zhelyazkov added, of increased business transparency.
In response to the question of when he would resign, he said that the relevant scenario is laid out in the country’s Constitution.
MECH also demanded the Prime Minister’s resignation from the parliamentary rostrum.
“When will you resign? You are a hostage to Borissov and Peevski. Throw in the towel — go out among the people who are protesting against your oppressors,” Kiril Veselinski told Zhelyazkov.
The Prime Minister reiterated his answer, again referring to the Constitution.
WCC–DB once more called for Zhelyazkov’s resignation.
MP Elisaveta Belobradova handed him a folder labelled “resignation”, saying that the Prime Minister only needed to sign it. Zhelyazkov took the folder but did not sign it.
