Bulgaria’s Prime Minister will participate in the special meeting of the European Council in Brussels

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Kiril Petkov, will participate in the special meeting of the European Council. 30-31 May, in Brussels. European leaders will discuss the situation in Ukraine and the topics of security and defence, energy and food security.

The Heads of State and Government will discuss the latest developments related to the Russian military aggression in Ukraine and the EU's continued actions in support of Ukraine. A videoconference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is envisaged.

Security and defence will be discussed in the context of the follow-up to the Versailles Summit and the European Council in March 2022. The focus will be on ways to enhance resilience and defence capabilities through investment.

On energy, leaders will discuss the REPoweEU plan presented by the European Commission, aiming to make the EU independent of Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible by raising the level of ambition on renewables, energy efficiency and diversification of gas supplies. With regard to food security, the focus is on the need to mitigate the effects of the Ukrainian crisis on global food security and the actions taken by the European Commission to date.

Ensuring energy security through real diversification of sources and routes of supply is a priority for the Bulgarian government. The growing geopolitical uncertainty due to the situation in Ukraine has a tangible impact on the energy sector. Together with the energy price crisis, the suspension of gas supplies to Bulgaria by Gazprom export on 27 April 2022 poses serious challenges to our energy and economic systems. In this regard, Bulgaria has consistently defended the position that immediate and coordinated EU action is needed to overcome these challenges, with a focus on measures to ensure the sustainability of the energy system and the affordability of energy for citizens and businesses, as well as to contain high energy prices.
