Bulgaria’s Health Minister, prof. Serbezova, elected Vice President of the 75th Session of the World Health Assembly

Bulgaria’s Health Minister, prof. Prof. Assena Serbezova, on May 23 was elected Vice President on behalf of the European Region at the 75th Session of the World Health Assembly taking place in Geneva, Swiss Confederation, from 22 to 28 May 2022. The theme of this year’s Assembly is "Health for Peace, Peace for Health".

During the first plenary session, an Accreditation Committee was appointed and the Assembly's agenda was adopted by the General Committee, in which Minister Serbezova participates as Vice-President.

During the Assembly, Minister Serbezova will take part in a panel discussion organised by the Regional Directors of the Europe, Africa and Eastern Mediterranean Region of the World Health Organization on "Health for All, Regardless of Where They Come From" on the health of refugees and migrants.

During her visit to Geneva, Prof. Serbezova will have the opportunity to meet with Bulgarians working in the UN and other international organisations, the Ministry of Health said.

At each regular session, the Assembly elects a President and five Vice-Presidents - representatives of the 6 regions of the World Health Organization, who have identical powers and duties as the President of the Assembly.

As the supreme body of the health organisation, the World Health Assembly sets health policies, makes final decisions and directs the financial policies of the organisation. The Executive Board reports are discussed during the sessions. Guidance is also given on issues that may require further action, research or reports.

Receiving such a high position in the organisation is recognition of Bulgaria's contribution to the search for workable solutions in global health policy and security, the Ministry of Health added.
