NATO does not intend to stay out of the Black Sea for long, Commander of the NATO's Allied Maritime Command, Vice Admiral Keith Blount, said during his visit in Varna on May 10.

He announced that NATO is closely monitoring the military actions in Ukraine.

Security in the Black Sea is the main topic of the meeting between Vice Admiral Blount and the Commander of the Bulgarian Navy, Rear Admiral Kiril Mihailov.

The Bulgarian Navy continues to survey the waters of the Black Sea for floating mines, Rear Admiral Mihailov said. The operations are conducted jointly with Romania and Turkey.

"We review our plans every day, according to the situation. We have submarines, ships and planes at our disposal and we adapt their program on a daily basis. I would like to underline the capabilities of Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey and once again stress that NATO does not intend to stay out of the Black Sea for long," said Vice Admiral Keith Blount.

"We continuously monitor sea lanes to ensure safe and free navigation. Since the threat began we have received 18 alerts to which we have responded in a timely manner, fortunately none of them were confirmed to be a mine," added Rear Admiral Kirill Mihailov, Commander of the Navy.

Keith Blount is on an official visit to Bulgaria until May 11.
