District heating companies seek to increase the price of heating and hot water up to 330%

District heating companies have asked for an increase in the prices of heating and hot water between 29% in Sofia and 330% in Veliko Turnovo. This becomes clear from the published applications of the companies on the website of the energy regulator.

Their calculations, however, were made in March and do not take into account both the compensation granted by the state and the suspended supply of natural gas from Russia, which led to changes in fuel prices.

A week ago, one of the regulator's members, Alexander Yordanov, was heard in the parliamentary energy committee about the companies' demands, where he said:

"Yes, there are demands for an increase. There are no requests for price decrease. Any comments on the price applications before we have also taken into account the result of the compensation that the companies have received would rather distort the public's perception of what the prices will be."

A day later, Energy Minister, Alexander Nikolov, also warned of a possible double-digit hike in heating and hot water prices from 1 July.

"District heating companies have a different model of operation, therefore there will be a different effect on the final price, because the efficiency of management and the way the technological solutions work are different. When the price of natural gas is increased several times, no matter how heavy it sounds, an increase of several tens of percent is not unexpected. Solutions will be sought to compensate consumers. Surely this will be commented at the level of the Council of Ministers, and at the level of the Deputy Prime Minister".

The energy regulator is to come up with its own calculations of how much electricity and heat prices will change from July.

According to unofficial information, electricity for households is expected to rise by about 3-4 percent, while heating and hot water prices will increase by about 40 percent on average.
