calls president convene consultative council national security regarding north macedonia

In a video address on May 20, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov calls on President Rumen Radev to convene a Consultative Council for National Security on the state of the negotiations between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia.

The prime minister stresses that the Bulgarian government will do nothing without broad national agreement and in line with the coalition agreement.

"The Consultative Council on National Security should involve all parties, all services and the presidential institution. The Foreign Ministry should submit a report on the state of negotiations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia. This report will also be discussed at the regular coalition council next week," the prime minister asked.

Kiril Petkov confirms that the cabinet will do nothing on the basis of external pressure and before a full understanding at the level of the coalition council, a thorough discussion in the NCNS, and a clear and confirmed position from the highest body in this country: the Bulgarian Parliament.

"Only the National Assembly has the final legitimate mandate on the issue of North Macedonia and this should be absolutely clear to the Bulgarian society and to our foreign partners," Petkov concluded his address.
