From January 1 to December 31, 2021, 1,841 (1,329 for 2020) violations of road traffic rules were registered in Sofia including for driving motor vehicles after drinking alcohol, use of drugs and their precursors, as well as driving without a driving license, Sofia police reported on February 10.
During the aforementioned period, traffic police officers carried out police checks on 293,799 vehicles, with a total of 27,476 (24,732 in 2020) tickets and 47,849 (36,980 in 2020) notices issued.
175 road accidents were caused by drink driving and 12 crashes after the use of drugs and their precursors.
A total of 2,016 drivers were sanctioned for driving without third party liability insurance.
3,841 (3,223 in 2020) pedestrians were fined for crossing the road incorrectly and 956 drivers for taking the right of way on pedestrian crossings.
During the period, there were 659 serious road traffic accidents and 8,270 (7,458 in 2020) minor road traffic accidents. There were 52 fatalities and 741 (748 for 2020) injured.
17 accidents occurred with scooters. 2,639 drivers were sanctioned for speeding with more than 50km/h above the speed limit.
879 vehicles were restricted for use for technical reasons.
