The influx of refugees at the Polish-Ukrainian border continues. Thousands seek refuge and shelter in Poland. This morning, March 2, US Vice President Kamala Harris assured Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki that the United States will continue to assist Poland and Hungary with the refugee flow. Harris has spoken with the leaders of the five NATO Eastern Flank countries.

BNT special envoys Tihomir Ignatov and cameraman Mikhail Vrabchev are in the Polish town of Przemysl, one of the places with the largest number of refugees.

Here is what they have to say:

More than 380,000 refugees are heading to Poland. We are now about 20 km from the border with Ukraine in one of the reception centres that have been built. The authorities in Poland say they were preparing for this moment weeks before the war started and were expecting such an influx.

Along the Polish-Ukrainian border, eight points have been set up on the border itself and one in the town of Przemyśl, where we are now. The checkpoints provide space for food, rest and medical assistance. Everyone crossing the Polish-Ukrainian border receives a leaflet with basic information. Most of the checkpoints are within walking distance, and transport is provided to those further away.

Crossing the border into Poland is also possible with expired identity documents. Checkpoints have also been opened at railway stations in regional towns. Border crossing times are between 10 and 20 hours. The border system is overwhelmed and this is one of the reasons it takes a lot of time for crossing.

EU President Charles Michel is in Poland. This is what he said:

"Only together can we act quickly and take decisive action, including imposing tough sanctions on Russia. Let's be honest - these sanctions will have consequences for us too, but this is a matter of preserving democracy and international law. The reason I am here in Poland this morning is not just to show that we stand in solidarity with the country that is bearing the brunt of the refugee pressure, but to reaffirm that we are all in this ordeal together."
