The district administration in the Bulgarian coastal city of Bourgas on March 21 convened an urgent meeting with the state institutions in connection with the information that naval mines, washed off the beach in Odessa, Ukraine, by a storm and floating in the Black Sea, and pose a risk to vessels, especially in the water area of the Bulgarian Varna and Bourgas.

All measures have been taken to inform fishing boats and other boatyards, as well as cargo ships, about the possible danger of mines. Fortunately, the weather is on our side at the moment and there are no ships at sea, said Bourgas District Governor, Stoyko Tankov.

No institution has any information about sightings of such objects, he added.

Border police have information about patrolling ships. Regarding military information - more details will be given at a briefing in Varna at 3 pm.

There is a mechanism, there is readiness in local structures to deal with such objects, Tankov added.

We have doubts whether there are any such mines at all, because this information comes from the Russian services, from the city of Sochi.

There is no need for the citizens of Bourgas to worry, the district governor added.

Earlier, the Bulgarian Maritime Administration said that the measures in place for the time being because of the risk of naval mines, are constant monitoring of the country's maritime borders, as well as the courses of all vessels in the Black Sea area. According to the maritime administration, the mines could reach Bulgarian waters within 10 days, but if this happens, they will be quite far from the coast

In order to identify more measures, today the Governor of Bourgas met with the institutions to assess how to protect the country’s maritime borders. Our naval forces are also on standby for possible situation, but there is currently no direct risk to people, he said.

The population in the seaside regions was advised to be vigilant and if someone spots any suspicious round objects in the sea or on the shore, they should call 112.
