The Minister for Innovation and Growth, Daniel Lorer, and the Director General of the European Space Agency signed a European Cooperating State Agreement on February 16. In this way, Bulgarian companies and research organisations will be able to participate in selection procedures and implement their projects with space application.

This Agreement is a symbol of Bulgaria's increased interest and commitment to continue its cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and to provide the conditions to achieve its increased ambitions to develop its space industry and participate in ESA initiatives. This was stated by the Minister for Innovation and Growth, Daniel Lorer, who together with the Director General of the European Space Agency, Josef Aschbacher, signed in Toulouse a new extended European Cooperating State Agreement between Bulgaria and the Agency.

The agreement enables Bulgarian companies and research organisations to participate in selection procedures and to implement their projects with space applications. It foresees the implementation of a European Cooperating State Plan, which aims to enhance the readiness of the Bulgarian space sector to fully participate in ESA programmes in view of Bulgaria’s future full membership in the Agency.

ESA Director General, Josef Aschbacher, pointed out that it was a great pleasure for him to sign the European Cooperating State Agreement for Bulgaria.

Minister Lorer said that he expects the cooperation to deepen by agreeing on more efficient and expanded opportunities for the implementation of projects of mutual interest in the field of applied research and high-tech products and services.

In his words, cooperation with ESA is of utmost importance for Bulgaria. It also contributes to improving the quality and competitiveness of the research and technology sector, as well as to increasing the visibility of Bulgarian innovative companies.

The Minister of Innovation and Growth underlined that more and more sectors are inspired by space potential and in particular by space technologies and are transferring them to other areas, including for the development of innovative business models, investments and growth.

The agreement provides access to ESA's youth programmes for scholarships and fellowships, as well as the opportunity to participate in the mutual exchange of experts, scientific and technical information, data and commodities of mutual interest, in the field of space science, technology and applications.

The joint work between Bulgaria and ESA to develop the sustainability and competitiveness of Bulgarian enterprises in the space sector and to preserve scientific potential continues.

The Agreement reflects Bulgaria's ambitions to intensify space activities, to build a sustainable and competitive space sector and science and to actively participate in European space initiatives and programmes.
