The strengthening of the interaction between the Bulgarian authorities and the European Prosecutor's Office was discussed by the caretaker Minister of Justice, Ivan Demerdzhiev and the European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Kovesi, the press office of the Ministry of Justice announced on November 29.

"After our meeting on June 10, 2021, the Ministry of Justice took action to expand the range of bodies under Art. 24, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Regulation on the European Public Prosecutor's Office and on the establishment of additional channels for reporting to the European Public Prosecutor's Office on crimes ", explained Minister Demerdzhiev.

He pointed out that as a result, Bulgaria has notified two more institutions to submit signals to the European Prosecutor's Office on initiated criminal proceedings - the Ministry of Interior and the Customs Agency.

The circle of institutions that can submit signals to the European Public Prosecutor's Office has also been expanded.

"We believe that these actions will strengthen the cooperation between the European Prosecutor's Office and the Bulgarian authorities," Demerdzhiev added.

Laura Kovesi praised the efforts of the team of the Ministry of Justice on the issues raised in June, according to the Ministry of Justice.

"The fact that you have expanded the method of reporting under Art. 24, paragraphs 1 and 2 is something we welcome. In this way, we can receive signals directly from the police, the Border Police and the Customs Agency. This will certainly improve not only our cooperation, but also the quality of cases. In general, I can say that our cooperation with Bulgaria is very good, in the beginning we had a certain problem that all cases had to go through the Prosecutor's office and in the beginning we received only small cases. "Now that this possibility has been expanded, we will be able to directly discuss various issues with the authorities in the front line in establishing crimes," Kovesi said at the meeting.

Ivan Demerdzhiev and Laura Kovesi also discussed the need for changes in Bulgarian legislation in connection with the work of the European Prosecutor's Office.

The ministry is actively working on these issues and is ready to bring them to the attention of the 47th National Assembly, the ministry said.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Pavlova, Mitka Zaharlieva, director of the International Legal Cooperation and European Affairs Directorate and Florian Florov from the same directorate. Milan Yaron, Chief Counsel, and Teodora Georgieva, European Prosecutor, also took part.
