Covid-19 beds in Sofia hospitals will be increased by 10%

The number of beds for the treatment of patients with Covid-19 in Sofia will be increased by about 10% this week, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova wrote on Facebook on January 17.

This is one of the measures that were discussed during a meeting the municipal headquarters with the director of the Sofia Regional Health Directorate, Dr. Penchev.

According to the new anti-epidemic plan, Sofia is in Stage 2, taking into account both the percentage of occupied intensive care beds and the number of patients, the reported increase in cases and the registered morbidity.

Of the 1,878 beds opened so far, 63% of the beds for uncomplicated patients and 71% of the beds for people in intensive care are occupied. The increase in the number of beds will be based on the capacity of hospitals to provide medical staff. The directors of all municipal hospitals have declared their readiness to increase the number of beds for Covid patients, Fandakova writes.

Since last week, there has been an increase in cases by about 30% on weekly basis, with a morbidity rate of 1,756 per 100,000 people.

Schools and kindergartens in Sofia remain open, with only individual schools and kindergartens temporarily closed due to higher increase of infections and quarantined students and staff.

With a decision of the headquarters, the control teams of municipal officials and the police will conduct large number of checks for wearing masks in public transport. More than 4,000 inspections have been carried out since the beginning of January by teams from Sofia Inspectorate, the Emergency Directorate and the municipal police.

The percentage of vaccinated citizens on the territory of Sofia Municipality is 43%, and over 534,000 people have completed course of vaccination.
