MoFA: Three of the bodies found on burned-out ferry off Corfu island, may be Bulgarians

The bodies of four people have been found so far in the burned-out ferry in the Ionian Sea, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said on February 25.

Three of the bodies are undergoing DNA sampling. It is thought they may be Bulgarian citizens. Six more people are being sought. The operation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Bulgarian driver Alexi Penev, who was injured in the Greek ferry fire, will be discharged from hospital on Monday. This was announced by the owner of the haulage company Ilian Filippov, after he had a conversation with the attending doctor at the hospital in Corfu.

The doctor has explained that Penev's condition is stable, but just in case he will remain under medical observation over the weekend.

On Monday, the discharged patient is scheduled to go on a ferry, with a car, to travel to Bulgaria to the town of Petrich, where he lives.

There has been no change yet in the situation of the rescue operation on board the ferry "Euroferry Olympia".

Greek firefighters and coastguards on February 21 resumed the search for 10 people still missing from last week’s ferry fire in the Ionian sea. The Italian-flagged “Euroferry Olympia” caught fire en route to the Italian port of Brindisi.

More than 270 were rescued from the ship and taken to the island of Corfu.

One of the passengers, a 21 year old Belarusian lorry driver, missing aboard the ferry, was found alive on Sunday,

Ten people - seven Bulgarians, two Greeks and one Turk – remain unaccounted for.

The people missing are all thought to be lorry drivers.

The body of a 58-year-old Greek lorry driver was recovered on Sunday, the first confirmed death in the accident.
