moi death rate road accidents has increased since beginning year

Road traffic fatality rate in the country has increased by 30% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 2021, Ministry of Interior said on April 19 during a public hearing on draft changes to the Road Traffic Act.

The highest number of people killed in crashes is in the region of Rousse, Northern Bulgaria. The capital Sofia is second in terms of road traffic fatalities. The number of serious accidents has also increased by just over 10%.

These figures are the reason why the Ministry of the Interior has proposed changes to the Road Traffic Act that would seriously increase penalties for road traffic offences.

The draft Law on Amendments and Additions to the Road Traffic Act is published on the website of the Ministry of Interior. In early December 2021, on the orders of Minister Rashkov, a working group was established to analyse the exisiting law. The task of the experts was to conduct a comprehensive review of the legal framework. Specific proposals and recommendations were drawn up and included in the draft.
