“Pirogov" hospital: The main reason for high Covid-19 mortality rate is that patients come when it is too late

Sofia city easies some of the anti-epidemic measures, District Governor, Ivan Kyuchukov, said on February 9.

Because of Covid-19 the percentage of deaths in "Pirogov" emergency hospital has increased significantly. The management explains that this is because the hospital has taken the most severe cases.

"The problem is that a very large number of patients who come to Pirogov Hospital because of Covid-19, arrive at the last minute, we have had cases where we had to intubate people straight from the door," the executive director, Prof. Dr. Ivan Poromanski, said

Some 543 Covid-19 patients were treated in Pirogov's intensive care unit during the third and fourth waves of the pandemic. Now, much fewer intensive care beds are occupied. The hospital in Dobrich is also in the black list of hospitals with the highest mortality rate for Covid-19 patients - 33%. Nevin Ismet's 62-year-old father died in that hospital.

"He didn't go into intensive care, as far as I know he was with a mask, that's how they gave him oxygen, he wasn't on a ventilator. The doctor I spoke to told me that my father was quite inadequate, aggressive and she was afraid to go in to see him," says Nevin Ismet.

Later that evening, she was told that her father had died. Nevin was convinced that he had not been cared for.

Anatoli Trakisiki is among the two-thirds of patients, whose life was saved. His opinion is different.

"They were completely professional with me, I received all the manipulations that were needed. I was constantly under observation, constantly asking how I was, how I felt" , says Anatoli Trakiiski.

According to the director of the hospital, the main reason for the high mortality rate is that only this hospital has an intensive care unit.

"For a pandemic of such a scale, I do not think there is a team, not only at national level, but also in the world, which would be prepared as adequately as possible," Dr. Georgi Zhelyazkov from the hospital in Dobrich says.

There is no other hospital in the region. It is very difficult to adequately take care of 100 people in a severe condition.

Both Pirogov and the Dobrich hospital say that the high mortality rate from Covid-19 is also due to the low vaccination rate.
