Prime Minister Petkov at an audience with his holiness Pope Francis

The audience of the Bulgarian delegation, led by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, with the head of the Roman Catholic Church - Pope Francis, began at the Vatican on May 23. The official Bulgarian delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister Assen Vassilev, Foreign and Education Ministers Teodora Genchovska and Nikolay Denkov.

Immediately after the audience with His Holiness, PM Petkov will meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Perolin.

The day of the Bulgarian delegation began with a Divine Liturgy in the Basilica of San Clemente, where the tomb of St. Cyril the Philosopher is located. The service was led by the Western and Central European Metropolitan Anthony.

"The alphabet given to us by Saints Cyril and Methodius makes Old Bulgarian culture extremely significant for European civilization, and great minds call Bulgaria a 'cultural miracle' of the Slavs. And today, on the eve of May 24, the great day of Bulgarian spirituality, it is important to remember that it is up to us to preserve and carry on the tradition of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius so that the Bulgarian word can be strengthened as a spiritual bridge," Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said in his speech at the tomb of St. Cyril the Philosopher.

In the afternoon, the Bulgarian Prime Minister will also see his Italian counterpart. Immediately after his traditional visit to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Pope Adrian II blessed the Slavonic script and books, Kiril Petkov will also meet the delegation of North Macedonia, led by Dimitar Kovacevski.
