road construction workers staged national protest

A national protest by road construction workers from across the country started in the morning on April 13 in the capital Sofia and other cities. Road sections in more than 25 locations are blocked to traffic.

The protest is staged becasue road repairs have been stopped due to the state treasury's debts of one billion BGN to road construction companies.

In Sofia, the protesters appealed outside the Ministry of Finance and then the Council of Ministers.

The government is ready to immediately pay road construction companies more than 600 million BGN, Prime Minister Kirill Petkov said yesterday.

The decision to allocate funds was rejected twice last week and was not voted on in the National Assembly.

"We are waiting for a decision to finally be taken on the payment of works carried out a year ago, which have been dragging on with various procedural tricks. We want to work," said Georgi Zlatev from the Bulgarian Branch Chamber "Roads".

Traffic on Tsar Osvoboditel Bulevard is temporarily blocked.

The road builders insist on being paid not 50 but 100 percent of the money, until then they are ready for protest actions.
