The Prosecutor’s Office complained of attacks and manipulative statements by the government

The Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria is under attacks, which are systematic violation of the principles of the rule of law, expressed in manipulative and false statements by representatives of the executive and legislative powers.

This is what Dessislava Pironova, Deputy Prosecutor General and Head of the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office, said at a briefing on March 29.

"Too often the false and manipulative statements are aimed at insulting and affecting individual prosecutors and this is an attempt to influence them by means that are not allowed by law. The attacks are likely aimed at controlling the Prosecutor's Office and using it for illegitimate political purposes," Pironova said.

She read out a position of the state public Prosecutor’s Office , which said that in the past year it reported numerous attacks against the judiciary and in particular against the Prosecutor’s Office in violation of fundamental national and European values. This damages prestige and hampers efforts to fight crime. These attacks threaten the rights of every Bulgarian citizen, given the blatant disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law, the Deputy Prosecutor General said.

The statement said that the false allegations border on outright lies and therefore the Prosecutor's Office will try to summarise them and present objective information to the public.

In this regard, Dessislava Pironeva pointed to specific criticisms addressed to the prosecution by Justice Minister Nadezhda Yordanova, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, Minister of Interior Boyko Rashkov, Deputy Prime Minister Assen Vassilev, “Democratic Bulgaria” co-chairman Hristo Ivanov, and the head of the Prime Minister's Office Lena Borislavova, to which she responded on behalf of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The allegations are on various cases, including "Barcelonagate", the interrogation of Vassil Bozhkov, the closure of the specialised Prosecutor’s Office and specialised court.

Dessislava Pironova announced that from now on the Prosecutor’s Office will regularly review the false allegations against the state prosecution, accompanied by answers on each of them.

The European partners will also be informed about all this, Pironeva added.
