Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Kiril Petkov on January 25 convened the Security Council with the Council of Ministers. The topic is the tension in Ukraine and the plans of the NATO allies to bolster the eastern flank of the Alliance. According to Prime Minister Petkov, the main task will be to analyse the state of the national security protection system.

Hours before the council began, Kiril Petkov said tensions on the NATO-Russia line were rising.

"We all see it. There is no war. We will be, as I have said many times, a constructive partner and ally in NATO and the EU, so that we are in line with our allies," Petkov said.

Petkov requested that the most responsible national position be taken, based on a full analysis. He also said that the public will be informed about the adopted strategy and there will be no surprises. According to the Prime Minister, NATO ships in the Black Sea and planes coming to Bulgaria are not due to an emergency.

"In 2016, a decision was made for increased NATO air policing and for enhanced entry into the Black Sea by warships, but this is within this framework. There is no new framework," said Kiril Petkov.

The meeting of the Defence Committee was attended by the Minister of Defence, who said that there is no build-up of troops in Bulgaria.

"There is no decision of the Bulgarian government on this type of movement, amass and deployment of NATO troops on Bulgarian territory. This type of decision is in a processs of preparation. When this decision is made, it will be communicated to all Bulgarian citizens," said Stefan Yanev. Defence Minister.

"At the moment we understand from foreign media and foreign officials what is planned to be done in Bulgaria, which is not correct. Nobody wants a conflict, but let it be clear what the government wants to do, because at the moment obviously one hand does not know what the other one is doing. It will be clear today," said Hristo Gadzhev, a GERB-UDF MP.

"Bulgaria must not take part in any wars of aggression. De-escalation of tensions must be sought, the conflict should be resolved by peaceful means, and ultimately dialogue with Russia should be restored to a much higher level," said Atanas Zafirov, chairma of the Defence Committee.

The Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence met today with the Ambassador of the United States of America to Bulgaria, Herro Mustafa. The Ministry of Defence announced only that topics related to the strategic partnership between the two countries, the development of projects for the modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces, as well as the security environment in the region were discussed.

An extraordinary sitting of Parliament is scheduled for tomorrow. The agenda includes hearings of the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs, as well as the heads of several services.
