Three naval mines were found on the territory of the Black Sea this morning - the first near the Igneada shelf, close to the Bulgarian maritime border with Turkey, the second near Cape Galata near the Bulgarian coastal city of Varna and the third near Cape Midia.
On March 28, 2022, in the morning hours, a mine was discovered on the Igneada shelf, near the Bulgarian maritime border. Submarine defence (SAS) teams in the region were quickly transferred to the scene," the Turkish Ministry of Defence said in Twitter.
"The mine in question was secured by SAS teams and an intervention was taken to neutralise it," the ministry added.
The Bulgarian Navy will carry out reconnaissance and survey following a tip-off of a mine sighting in the Black Sea. The Navy will survey the area by helicopter, and if necessary a ship with a special group will be sent to destroy the mine afterwards.
The naval mine was discovered by a fisherman about 70 kilometres off Cape Midia in the Black Sea. A Romanian navy ship headed to the site to investigate the situation, Romania Journal reported. The minesweeper Vice Admiral Constantin Belescu, with a group of demining divers on board, is carrying out a reconnaissance and intervention mission in a maritime area located about 39 nautical miles (70-72 km) off the Black Sea coast, opposite Cape Midia, where a sea mine has been reported to be drifting, Romania's Ministry of National Defence said.
The mine was spotted this morning by the Romanian fishing vessel “Olympus 1”. The commander of the vessel informed the Romanian authorities through official channels at around 08:10.
In accordance with the Convention on the Deployment of Underwater Automatically Exploding on Contact Mines, it is forbidden to anchor them as they are unsafe if they become detached from the ropes with which they are secured.
