Two people were killed in a fire in the centre of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. The fire started in a block of flats at the corner of “Han Asparuh” street and “vitosha” boulevard in the morning on February 22.
Fire fighters are on site and continue extinguishing the fire. The fire has already been contained. There is no danger to the people in the neighbouring buildings.
Around 5.30 this morning, the residents of the block of flats and people from the neighbouring buildings were woken up by flames. Two women have died and a man is in hospital with 5% burns. Other 15 people have been evacuated.
Mirena's husband was one of the first to report the fire to 112.
Like a torch from the third floor, suddenly the roof was literally on fire and it was blazing up there, Mirena says.
About 200 square metres of the roof were burned.
On orders by Sofia Mayor, Ms Fandakova, we are helping the people who are from the affected apartments, if there is a need for accommodation, if there is a need for other actions, said Krasimir Dimitrov, director of the Emergency Aid and Prevention Directorate at Sofia Municipality.
The building is beamed, which makes extinguishing the fire extremely difficult, firefighters said.
Because with a beam, the smoke spreads very quickly, as well as the fire goes up to the next floors, said Chief Inspector Emil Nikolov, head of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Sector.
The moment a person stops pouring water there, 3 minutes later flames arise again, added Mirena Pencheva, an eyewitness.
People from nearby offices were unable to get to their workplace today.
Georgi works in the building next door and knows the woman from whose apartment he believes the fire started.
The woman has mental health issues, said Georgi Bogdanov, executive director of the National Network for Children. They had family quarrels, often, but she was generally good-natured. She fed cats, he added.
Experts from the municipality will inspect the building to determine whether it is habitable.
