A single mother from the village of Zhelezno, Plovdiv district, Southern Bulgaria, killed her 8-year-old daughter with a knife, the Ministry of Interior press office said on June 1.
The woman then injured herself and was admitted to hospital in serious condition. The health facility did not give further information about her condition.
The police said they have opened pre-trial proceedings, but the prosecutor's office clarified that it would not comment on the case for the time being.
Local people said that the mother, Lili Khalkalieva, 31, was extremely caring towards the child. She is graduate in agronomy, but recently had no job.
The residents of the village are in shock. The social services commented that they had received no reports that the family was at risk and were not included in their support programmes.
