Bulgaria will ask the European Commission for protective measures against Ukrainian honey imports. This will happen on Monday in Brussels at the meeting of EU agriculture and fisheries ministers.
According to the approved position of this country, the serious increase in imports of Ukrainian honey in Bulgaria hampers the realisation of local production, and the significant quantities of Ukrainian honey entering the European market at very low prices put pressure on the prices of Bulgarian honey.
The EC has already taken precautionary measures regarding honey imports from Ukraine, which, however, according to Bulgaria, have not had the expected deterrent effect.
The average import price of Ukrainian honey into Bulgaria is twice lower than the average price of honey producers in the country. Increased imports of Ukrainian honey have also led to a decrease in honey exports from Bulgaria to other European countries.
