A child aged 1 year and 9 months was found dead in a septic tank in the village of Petrevene, near Lukovit, (Northern Bulgaria) after being searched by police for three days.
The missing boy was reported to the police in Lukovit in the afternoon of 29 July. For three days police officers searched ponds, properties and areas in the region of the village of Petrevene.
Yesterday, the child's body was discovered in a septic tank on the village's land. On initial inspection, no signs of violence were found. Petrevene mayor Nikolai Georgiev explained that the septic tank was located in a private farm yard.
"A septic tank from a tap where they used to wash the bathtubs. Its opening, where it drains, is 30 by 30 and the child was not supervised by the mother. She had left him unattended. It was sleeping there, she had left it 4-5 metres away from her, what was she doing, may be she was digging something with a hoe, I have no idea. The child got up, left and went straight into the pit. This pit was secured, there was some kind of a board on it, but apparently when the tractor passed it, it moved it," said the village mayor.
He specified that the family was from the neighbouring village of Todorichene, but worked in Petrevene.
The District Prosecutor's Office in Lovech has been informed about the case, pre-trial proceedings have been initiated and the investigation is ongoing.
