The air in Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastal city of Varna is getting cleaner - the concentration of fine particulate matter is decreasing, according to data collected from two air quality monitoring stations in the city.

The two automatic air quality monitoring stations near the “Angel Kanchev” school and in the Chaika district report a drop in pollution levels since the beginning of the year compared to the previous two years.

The highest and most serious pollutions were reported in the winter months due to the use of solid fuels for heating and the specifics of the city's climate. For the municipality, the main source of fine particulate matter remains the burning of solid fuels and wood for domestic heating, which accounts for over 43 percent of emissions, and road transport with almost 43 percent share. Pollution from manufacturing processes came third with 13 per cent.
