Liberal International Congress began in Sofia

The Congress of the Liberal International began in Sofia on June 30. The aim is to outline the liberal vision for the development of the world in the coming years.

Today the event was opened by the President of the Liberal International and the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF).

Hakima El Haite, President, Liberal International: This congress should have taken place two years ago. But now it is happening at a very important moment in our common history and it is happening at the right time in the right place. It is very symbolic for us liberal democracies to give a strong clear signal to all those who want to threaten our values - a free and peaceful world.

Mustafa Karadayi, MRF leader: Russia's war against Ukraine has triggered a reaction in different parts of the world, plunging the international order, anchored in the UN Charter, into an unprecedented crisis since the end of the Cold War. It is no coincidence that this year's congress passes under the slogan "Restoring the world liberal order".
