President Radev: Dialogue is needed, search for common mechanisms and solutions to tackle the crises

Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev arrived in Prague to participate in the informal European Council, which starts today, October 6, with the first meeting of the so-called European political community.

"Dialogue is needed, a search for common mechanisms and solutions to deal with the crises, President Radev said. The energy crisis requires new approaches, because the survival of the European economy, which is threatened by a loss of competitiveness, depends on this crisis," President Radev said.

He said that the presence of Norway, Azerbaijan and Turkey are present at the forum is important. Bulgaria's role as an initiator of important initiatives is also important, the Head of State added.

He also noted the ongoing discussions he had with presidents and prime ministers.

"This forum is a great basis to work further on our energy, transport and digital connectivity, and Bulgaria should take advantage of its location," Rumen Radev said.

He held talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on the topic of Bulgaria’s bid to join Schengen, acknowledging that Bulgaria cannot be put under double standards. It will not be easy, but we will continue with our efforts.

As regards the bilateral meeting with President Erdogan, Radev said that it is important to develop our relations in the energy sector as gas from Azerbaijan passes through Turkey's gas transmission network. Also important is Turkey's role in securing slots in Turkish LNG terminals. Turkey is an important partner in the fight against migration pressure, Rumen Radev said.

He added that Bulgaria is in talks with the US, Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Israel to acquire combat aircraft.

In Prague, Bulgaria’s head of state discussed the issues of energy and economy at the meeting of the European Political Community, a French initiative that brings together the European Union with 17 countries from the eastern neighbourhood, such as Ukraine and Moldova, as well as the Western Balkans, to discuss security issues.

Rumen Radev arrived in the Czech Republic after a visit to Malta. In the Mediterranean island country, the President took part in the 17th Meeting of the Presidents of the Member States which are parliamentary republics and the so-called "Arraiolos" format.
