19-year-old girl dies after fall from climbing trail on Malyovitsa mount

A 19-year-old girl has fallen from the cliffs and died while climbing the Via Ferrata route, also known as the Iron Trails, in Malyovitsa mount in Bulgaria’s Rila mountain, southwestern Bulgaria.

The fatal accident happened on Sunday, August 28.

The Mountain Rescue Service confirmed the tragic incident to BNT (September 1).

The accident happened around noon, two boys were with her and they called the rescuers. The mountain rescue service responded immediately after receiving the alert.

The 19-year-old girl had fallen from the rocks and died. She did not have the necessary specialised safety equipment for this terrain. The group of youths probably also had no prior technical training. The place is very dangerous.

An investigation is currently underway.

Via ferrata Malyovitsa was built in 2010 by the then hut keeper of Malyovitsa Hut, Ivan Maslarov - Bayno, with the help of mountaineers. Currently the site is not managed and its use is prohibited. Climbing is at own risk and responsibility.
