Bulgaria's caretaker PM Glavchev had talks with US President Biden at NATO summit

Bulgaria’s Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, who is representing Bulgaria at the NATO summit, talked with US President Joe Biden during the forum.

Glavchev assured Biden that Bulgaria is a loyal and reliable ally in the Alliance, and the US

President highly appreciated Bulgaria's role on the eastern flank. The leaders of the Alliance countries last night marked the 75th anniversary of the organisation.

US President Joe Biden welcomed his counterparts in the hall where the treaty establishing NATO was signed in 1949. His speech was accompanied by musical performances by the US Marine Corps Band. Biden stressed the importance of the Alliance, which he said is now stronger than ever.

“An overwhelming bipartisan majority of Americans understand that NATO makes us all safer. The fact that both Democratic and Republican parties are represented here today is a testament to that fact. The American people know that all the progress we’ve made in the past 75 years has happened behind the shield of NATO.And the American people understand what would happen if there was no NATO”.

Warning that autocrats are trying to upend the world order as we know it, the US head of state announced additional military aid to Ukraine.

“The United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy will provide Ukraine with the equipment for five additional strategic air defense systems.”

And in the coming months, the United States and our partners will provide Ukraine with dozens of additional tactical air defense systems," he said.

During the Summit in Washington, Ukraine is not expected to receive an invitation for NATO membership, but there will be assurances about the irreversibility of its path to the Alliance. President Biden awarded outgoing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the US's highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was formally selected as the next NATO Secretary General in June and will begin the job in October.
