GERB leader and former Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, who is visiting Stara Zagora on December 5, explained to journalists why he chose the candidacy of prof. Nikolai Gabrovski for Prime Minister.
Earlier on December 5, President Rumen Radev handed over the mandate to seek to form a government to the largest parliamentary group GERB-UDF. The party’s nomination for Prime Minister is Nikolai Gabrovski, a prominent neurosurgeon and deputy director of “Pirogov” emergency hospital.
"Of the politicians, I am the undisputed figure, the most successful, the most proven. At the moment, however, the political class is in such a situation that one by one all the parties are falling into isolation – as regards some laws in Parliament - Ukraine, armaments, eurozone - we are, let's say "Euro-Atlantic coalition". On other issues - social - we disagree," Borissov said.
He said that in the morning he had long talks with the parliamentary group, and there were two options for a candidacy - a purely party candidacy - whether it was Borissov, Tomislav Donchev or Desislava Atanasova.
The second option is to have a regular government. "We trust the political system to elect its own regular government to solve all issues and to be responsible," Borissov said. He described the possibility of reaching a third government-forming exploratory mandate as extremely risky, as it is not clear which of the parliamentary forces will receive it. By Constitution, the President gives the first and second government-forming mandate to thelargest and second-largest parliamentary group, while he can give the third mandate to a formation he chooses.
"Because of that - I took a step back again. MPs were very much against it. But GERB and UDF decided that this is the right thing for the country, the right way out of this permanent political crisis. He said that a likely early elections in March will result in the nearly the same Parliament, so that new elections will need to be held in May.
That's why we opted for an undoubtedly non-partisan candidate, proven, smart, successful, civic-minded, patriotic, critical, well educated, with professional skills, in the peak of his career. He agreed. This is the way to attract really successful, smart, educated people to support the political class," the GERB leader said.
