The project of repairing and organising the country's emergency medical care is neglected, Bulgaria’s caretaker Health Minister Dr. Assen Medzhidiev said after inspections in several hospitals in the country. In many places, repairs have not started, although public procurement tenders have been won.
According to the minister, the problem is in almost every district city. In order to implement the programme, he will request additional funds from the Ministry of Finance amounting to BGN 6 million for this year and another BGN 40 million for the next year.
Irregularities in the medical-diagnostic process have not been detected, but after the incident in which lightning struck an 18-year-old girl in Primorsko and she waited for an ambulance for 20 minutes, the problem of the lack of enough ambulances in the resorts is at the forefront.
For the whole of the Southern Black Sea coast there are only 12 of them, so measures have already been taken for additional help.
"At least in the two major resorts of Sunny Beach and Golden Sands we should deploy one 24-hour on-call team for emergency medical services during the summer months, not only until the end of this season, but also for the next. Contracts are currently being drawn up and arrangements are being made. These are the possibilities at the moment. This is what we have as possibilities and this is what I can provide," said Assen Medzhidiev.
