A protest by the taxi drivers in Sofia is taking place in front of the Sofia Municipality on October 28. Their main demand is an increase of the minimum and maximum taxi fares for transportation in Sofia.

The protesters are united in their requests. Their main plea is for an update of the taxi fares and a reduction of the annual tax. They say that most of them are already on the verge of bankruptcy.

“This demand has been ongoing for 9 years. According to the law, the municipality sets the fares, which has been done already. But it also has to update them once a year, which has not been done in the recent 9 years. We are talking about a 50% rise in taxi fares, which means a minimum fare of 1,15 leva per kilometre during the day and 1,32 leva during the night.” Krasimir Tsvetkov, chairman of the National Taxi trade union, said.

We want this because the price of the fuel most commonly used, methane went up by 110% in the last month. The insurances went up by 34% in the past year, while social security payments will also rise next year due to the higher minimum wage. That is why taxi fares should change, otherwise, we will go out of business with these expenses.” Petar Vladimirov from the National Taxi trade union explained.

As of 4.00 pm, the protest will continue indefinitely, with tents in front of the Executive Agency for Automobile Administration’s building. The taxi drivers demand the resignation of Boyko Ranovski, the director of the Agency.
