Four workers were trapped during excavation works for the construction of a sewer line in Pernik on November 28. The incident occurred in the “Humni Dol” residential district.
Two workers died when the trench hey were working in collapsed on top of them. Two other were rescued and taken to hospital. Their lives are not in danger.
The incident was reported shortly after 14:30. The cause of the incident is still unclear, investigation is on-going.
The mayor of Pernik Stanislav Vladimirov, told BNT that all relevant services reacted immediately and thanks to the quick intervention of the fire fighting teams, police and the contractor, two of the workers were rescued.
The trench is four metrres deep. The Labour Inspectorate in Pernik said that the trench was not properly reinforced and this was the reason for the collapse. The contractor will be fined. Work on the site has been suspended.
