Caretaker government allocates additional 40.7 million BGN for higher education institutions

After talks between caretaker Finance Minister Lyudmila Petkova; Education Minister Galin Tsokov and representatives of the trade unions, an agreement was reached for another 40.7 million BGN for the higher education establishments, caretaker Prime Minister, Dimitar Glavchev, told a briefing at the Council of Ministers on May 17.

"The credit goes to the trade unions, as it was the first time - the caretaker government will allocate 39 million, which we told you about the other day, when we in turn told you that the talks will be continued and as a result of these talks we can say that further 40.7 million BGN will be allocated," Glavchev specified.

"A few days ago, we commented that in addition to the 39 million to be given to the academic staff, additional funds should also be provided to increase the salaries of the administration. These 40.7 million BGN represent an increase in the salaries of the administration - about 26 million, 5.8 million for disproportions and 7.5 million for scholarships, respectively," clarified caretaker Finance Minister, Lyudmila Petkova.

On May 20 there will be no protest of higher education establishments in the country, it became clear at the briefing.

Before the statements at the Council of Ministers, however, the Council of Rectors sent out a position paper to the media stating that the universities would remain closed on Monday. "The aim of the protest is real measures, making commitments and implementing them," they said.
