Flooded kindergartens, underpasses, stranded cars after downpour in Sofia

Torrential rain mixed with hail poured down in Sofia in the afternoon on May 22. As at 18:15, the Fire Brigade received about 55 signals on the emergency number 112 for flooded ground floors, fallen trees and blocked sewers.

What were some of the damages?

• "Mladost 1" residential district- community centre and kindergarten are being drained;
• "Musagenitsa" residential district - flooded ground floor of a nursing home;
• "Suhata Reka" residential district - flooded ground floors of a school and kindergarten;
• removal of a fallen tree near the Serdika Shopping Mall;
• under the bridge in "Hristo Smirnenski" residential area, a car was stuck in "Slatinska" street, which was half covered with water. The driver was in the car, but there was no danger to his health;
• a bus on line 118 was stuck on the road from the village of Yana towards Sofia. There are 5 passengers on the bus.

A lightning struck a 30-year-old man in the "Mladost" district in Sofia. The incident was reported at 18:53.

The Emergency Aid told BNT that the injured man will be hospitalised at the St. Anna Hospital in the capital.

The lightning fell next to him. The man is in non-life threatening condition, with minor burns.
