Bulgaria nominates Kristalina Georgieva for a second term as IMF Managing Director

Bulgarian National Bank’s Governor, Dimitar Radev, has nominated Kristalina Georgieva for a second term as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, the central bank said on March 14.

“In my capacity as the Governor of the IMF for Bulgaria, I have submitted the nomination of Kristalina Georgieva to continue to serve as Managing Director of the IMF for a second term. Ms Georgieva has successfully led the institution during the recent challenging and turbulent years and has gained the trust and respect of the Fund’s broader membership. Radev explained his nomination.

The BNB Governor recalled that two days ago Belgian Deputy Prime Minister, Vincent Van Peteghem, on behalf of the European Union finance ministers, expressed support for Kristalina Georgieva for a second term.

”As announced by Minister Van Peteghem on behalf of the EU ministers of finance, Ms Georgieva enjoys their unanimous support for a second term. Over the last several days there have also been many other expressions of support beyond the EU, reflecting Ms. Georgieva’s strong leadership and service which has benefitted the IMF’s entire membership," Radev further said.

Kristalina Georgieva was elected Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund in October 2019. She visited Bulgaria this week and said she is ready for another term.

"My work as European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management has prepared me for the difficult situations I have faced since I headed the IMF. I am ready for a second term," Georgieva said at the time.

Two more countries are expected to join the IMF this year, bringing the Fund's membership to almost as many as the UN.
