The newest landmark - the Late-Antique “Irene” building - was opened in Bulgaria’s second largest city of Plovdiv today, April 18. It is part of the heritage of Philippopolis and together with the Bishop's and the Small Basilica in Plovdiv, it is inscribed in the UNESCO List of World Heritage.
"It is the best studied and the only preserved and displayed on site residential building of ancient Philippopolis with mosaic floors. Unfortunately not all of it has been uncovered, it is perhaps only the southern half of the building. We are in the representative part where the owners lived and where they organised feasts," explained Assoc. Prof. Elena Kantareva, director of the Municipal Institute "Ancient Plovdiv".
There are certain similarities between the basilicas. What unites them is that they functioned at the same time.
