Sofia District Prosecutor's Office is investigating the case of the switched babies in a hospital in Sofia.
Within a week, 28 people have been interviewed and genetic materials have been seized, Deputy District Prosecutor Ivan Stefanov told journalists on December 21. Neither of the two mothers refused to take a DNA test, he clarified.
"It has been established that the parents on the birth certificates of the two children do not match, i.e., the children were switched. The purpose of the investigation is to establish at what point the swap took place," he said.
Babies switched at birth at capital hospital - authorities launch checks into the case
Both children are currently with the mothers with whom they were discharged from the hospital. The Social Assistance Directorate is keeping up to date with the case and there is no evidence that either of the children are in danger.
The bracelets with the numbers were correctly placed on the babies at the hospital, but the bracelets on the two mothers had been swapped and it is because of this that one of the mothers had doubts about whether she was discharged with her child.
Earlier today, it emerged that the Medical Supervision Agency has launched an inspection at the hospital, which was reported to have discharged switched babies. According to unofficial information, the case is from “Sheinovo” Hospital in Sofia.
Pre-trial proceedings were also initiated in the case on 14 December for deliberate switch of babies.
