Although there is an increase in the number of people infected with COVID-19, the anti-epidemic measures will not be tightened, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said after a meeting with the National Task Force.Hospitals are equipped with enough medication for patients and protective clothing for doctors and they can now take increased number of infected.

The government does not intend to tighten anti-epidemic measures because, first, the state is much better prepared to respond. Hospitals are equipped with medicines, protective equipment and a sufficient number of intensive care beds.

Second, the virus has weakened.

Third, the number of infected is increasing, but the reason, is the greater number of tests that are conducted.

The main threat remains the clusters that are formed due to the fact that Bulgarian citizens from abroad are just returning to Bulgaria to spend the summer season here and bring the infection.

It is important to find a balance between medical and political considerations in order to maintain the economy.

The coronavirus has not gone, the number of infected is increasing, but the state has more tests, masks, medicines and capacity to withstand the pressure, the PM said.

“We never said that the coronavirus was gone,” Borissov said. “We have not deceived you that the pandemic is over. But to date, I believe that we should not panic in any way, because in addition to the number of infected, the number of recovered is increasing.”

The strength of virus is weakening. We have medicines and protective clothing. I have not called for stricter measures, but called for people to be more disciplined,” he said.

It is better if the measures are more relaxed during the summer, when people can handle the illness more easily than in October-November, said Prime Minister Borissov.

Assoc. Prof. Kostadin Angelov, Head of Alexandrovska Hospital: The severity of the diseases that this virus currently causes have less destructive ability for the macroorganism, that is, for us as its carriers.

The formation of new outbreaks of infected like the one in Kyustendil is due to Bulgarians who return from abroad and carry the infection.

The payment of BGN 1,000 per doctor working on the frontline will continue, the financing for the hospitals will continue.

Kiril Ananiev, Minister of Health: In this way I am convinced that we will maintain our medical institutions during the summer period and will prepare them for normal work, if there is a second wave of the virus, in September.

A small percentage of Bulgarians have antibodies, but more important for the disease is cellular immunity, which doctors are still studying.

Prof. Todor Kantardzhiev, director of the Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases: 2% of Bulgarians have antibodies, 3% of medical staff have antibodies and about 2.5% of people who wanted to tests them.

The Prime Minister and the task force ask the people to observe the three "Ds" - discipline, disinfection and distance.
