The Ministry of Interior of North Macedonia will take all necessary measures to ensure that the celebration of the anniversary of Gotse Delchev's birth passes without incidents. This was assured by the Minister of Interior of the Republic of North Macedonia Oliver Spasovski after a meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart Ivan Demerdzhiev on January 30.

Acting Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior and the President of the State Agency for National Security were in Skopje for talks with the Macedonian authorities. The purpose of the meeting is to ensure security and calm during the celebration of Gotse Delchev's birth anniversary on 4 February.

"Our ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of all citizens and persons who are on the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia and who come from outside. For the celebration of Gotse Delchev we want to make a clear recommendation that no incident will be allowed. The Macedonian police are taking all necessary measures and we absolutely will not allow an incident to happen, so we will secure a celebration that befits our great Gotse Delchev," Spasovski said.

Bulgaria’s caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Ivan Demerdzhiev, confirmed the good cooperation between the two countries and assured that he will take all measures to ensure that the people coming from Sofia do not cause provocations.

"We agreed that we are obliged to secure the event so as not to allow some people to light a fire where there is none," Demerdzhiev said.

Demerdzhiev has received the assurance of the authorities in the Republic of North Macedonia that the case of the beating of Hristian Pendikov will be investigated objectively and impartially. The Minister of Interior has handed over documents to his counterpart Spasovski concerning threats received by Pendikov while he was being treated in the hospital in Sofia and has received assurances that the threats will be investigated and all those responsible will be brought to justice.

"The aim is not only to take action in this case, but to prevent such incidents in the future.

Such incidents upset the relations between the two countries, which are in very good cooperation and in good relations between the peoples.

The future of both countries is linked to Europe. Bulgaria is a member of the EU, the Republic of North Macedonia is confidently walking on this road, but it is important to know that hate speech is not the way to Europe. Countries in Europe share values and in today's conversation we mutually convinced each other that both countries share European values," Demerdzhiev said.

Oliver Spasovski pointed out that the law enforcement authorities in North Macedonia approach all cases equally and strive to bring the perpetrators to the face of the law. In this case, the investigation continues - one of the accused in the beating is under arrest and another person is wanted.

Roadblocks to Skopje are being organised on social networks in the Republic of North Macedonia. The aim is to stop Bulgarians who want to go to the St. Spas Church to commemorate revolutionary Gotse Delchev on 4 February.

In a telephone conversation last week, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Gulub Donev and his Macedonian counterpart Dimitar Kovacevski discussed the need for the celebrations to proceed peacefully.
