We are closely monitoring the developments of the relations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, the European Commission said in response to BNT on February 7.
Brussels did not comment on the border tensions over the weekend on the grounds that it was not commenting on ongoing investigations or legal proceedings.
The European Commission recalled the importance of good neighbourly relations.
"In this context, efforts are needed on all sides to foster an atmosphere of dialogue and mutual respect and to avoid unnecessary tensions," the EC says.
