The European Commission on March 20 approved an investment of more than € 77 million to modernize Sofia's waste management system. This will allow the construction of a highly efficient installation that will generate heat and electricity from unrecyclable muncipal waste.
The technology, known as co-generation, will have a positive impact on environmental protection. It is estimated that the plant can produce heat for 40,000 people and electricity for 30,000 people.
The project is the final part of a three-stage waste management and recycling improvement programme in Bulgaria's capital Sofia. So far, Bulgaria has received a total of EUR 204 million from the European Regional Development Fund over two programming periods for a total of 12 years.
