The Omicron XBB.1.5 variant has been detected in Bulgaria for the first time, the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD) reports on February 20.
The variant is being closely monitored by the World Health Organization due to its potential for accelerated spread and is more immune evasive, and escapes immunity from vaccine or previous infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 variants, the NCIPD added.
11 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the country on February 20, 2023.
The patient with the new Omicron variant is from Sofia and is on home treatment.
