Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor, Ivan Geshev, held a working meeting with the Executive Vice President of the European Commission (EC) Frans Timmermans in Brussels, the press centre of the Prosecutor's Office announced on February 6.
Ivan Geshev expressed gratitude to Frans Timmermans for his efforts as the first Vice President of the Juncker Commission to adopt the decision at the end of 2019 to close the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (SME). The Chief Prosecutor expressed confidence in the lifting of the monitoring mechanism and stressed the need for continued actions in the fight against corruption at the "high levels of power" and the firm determination of the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria to implement them.
Ivan Geshev and Frans Timmermans also discussed the planned introduction of the new mechanism for strengthening the rule of law in all member states of the European Union (EU).
The Chief Prosecutor expressed his intention to inform the European Commission about the actions of the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office regarding the fight against corruption, organised crime and abuse of EU funds, as well as the current state of processes related to adherence to the rule of law. Ivan Geshev stressed that the Prosecutor's Office is for open dialogue and partnership with the European institutions.
