Bulgaria's budget deficit reached a record high of more than €2.5 billion, or 2% of GDP, by the end of May, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance under the consolidated fiscal programme.
Compared with April, the deficit increased by nearly €750 million. At the time, the government had already reported the largest shortfall in the state budget in 15 years.
Figures also show that, just one year ago, the deficit was 1.4 percentage points lower.
