A protest is taking place in Sofia’s so-called Triangle of Power, with demonstrators calling for the government to adopt a firmer policy on national security and defence.
The focus is on developments in the Black Sea and drones entering areas dangerously close to Bulgaria’s borders.
The protesters are criticising the Radev cabinet for relying too heavily on diplomatic relations with Russia. They are calling for Bulgaria’s defence capabilities to be strengthened and for closer cooperation with its EU and NATO partners.
The organisers say that maintaining peace must not mean backing down in the face of aggression.
Krasimira Zaharиеva: “We want some kind of response, protection for Bulgaria amid the devastation taking place in the Black Sea, and an independent policy as far as possible within the EU, while also receiving protection, of course. In my opinion, this is not governance but a dead end, and they should leave office.”
“I fully support the slogan of this protest: our security must be guaranteed, and our diplomacy really amounts to isolation.”
“I’m here to support the cause, which is national security. That’s it.”
“Our demands are for a basic, sensible foreign policy that guarantees domestic security, rather than burying our heads in the sand like ostriches.”
