Around 20 mothers and children got together for a silent protest in front of the Ministry of Justice building in Sofia to show their support to the Bulgarian mother, Elisaveta Popova, whose child was put up for adoption in Great Britain.
After a meeting with the Minister of Justice, Zinaida Zlatanova, it transpired that the only option for the child to come back to Bulgaria was the grandparents to submit an application, stating that they were close relatives of the little girl and had the right to regular contact with her. Such condition may deter the adoptive family, but will not stop the adoption process.
One available option is for the Bulgarian government to provide legal assistance to the Bulgarian family, because the child has double citizenship and the legal case is carried out under British law.
The Bulgarian mother Elisaveta is separated from her husband, who is British. The grounds for the separation were that she caught him watching child pornography films on the internet. The UK social workers dealing with the case told Popova to stay away from her husband. She however violated the ban and as a result the social services took the child from her.
