A renovated gas compressor station “Strandzha” was opened by Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov on 11th of April. The facility is located near the border with Turkey and will compress the gas into high pressure to facilitate the transit to Turkey.
Bulgaria invested 70 million BGN in the station. It is equipped with the latest modification of American compressors, which are reversive and can flow gas in both directions.
The facility is an important element of the future gas hub, Bulgaria’s energy minister, Temenuzhka Petkova said. 80% of the compressor stations in the region are located in Bulgaria and this is a prerequisite for the country to become a major distributor of the gas for the European Union. Energy minister emphasized that a possibility is being discussed for participation in the construction of a liquefied natural gas terminal in Alexandropoulos, as well as in an interconnector with Greece.
PM Borissov said that four similar compressor stations will be built in Bulgaria in the next year, with the EU financial support.
