“Thank you for not washing your hands of responsibility with mere findings. You stepped into the mud of decision-making, identified the problems and named those responsible.”

With these words, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov addressed his ministers at the start of the caretaker government’s final meeting on May 7.

“We managed to break the omertà within the judicial system, for which I would especially like to thank the deputy prime minister. It became clear that the air had shifted, and just how deep the silence runs — especially today, when the political omertà resembles concrete,” Mr Gyurov added.

He also expressed hope that the incoming government’s reviews of previous administrations would not focus solely on the work of the most recent caretaker cabinet.

“We were not merely observers,” he said, despite the transitional nature of a caretaker government by definition.

“It was not easy. We were attacked from all sides, often simultaneously, but that was to be expected in a state where institutions have been controlled for years.”

Gyurov compared his ministers to Spartans, saying they had proven to be “the right people, in the right place, at the right moment”.

“Our administration did not have a long term in office, but it had character. And now, as the curtain falls, only one thing matters — whether we leave with dignity. We believe we have done so, and I thank you for standing together.”

The Cabinet is expected to discuss 23 items during today’s Council of Ministers meeting. Among the key points are additional funding for the Ministry of Culture and Sofia Municipality, as well as proposed amendments to the Tax and Social Security Procedure Code.
