There should be fair rules on the market in all 28 countries of the European Union, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, said in the BNT breakfast programme on 8th of March.
He said that there was a double standard, both in terms of quality and product prices in individual countries. This is due not only to producers but also to local economic conditions, taxes and excise duties imposed by governments. A Food Code is currently being developed to apply throughout the community.
The conditions must be fair and we propose this new code of conduct for all 28 member states. We have the opportunity to give more powers to relevant institutions, responsible for fiood quality, to deal with these issues. But a public debate is needed. These issues are addressed in Bulgaria and in Germany and in Lithuania because it is necessary for competition to be fair and for the single market to be guided by fair rules. And many questions need to be resolved, Vytenis Andriukaitis said.
